PROVIDING CRYSTAL CLEAR VISION TO SACRAMENTO, ROSEVILLE, & NEARBY AREAS OF CALIFORNIA

WHO IS AT RISK FOR GLAUCOMA?

Glaucoma affects millions of people in the United States. It occurs most often in adults after age 40, but glaucoma can occur at any age. Our experienced eye doctors in Roseville and Sacramento, California, can determine whether you are at risk for or currently suffering from glaucoma and recommend the right course of treatment for you.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF GLAUCOMA?

Glaucoma is difficult to detect without an examination by your doctor. You will usually not notice glaucoma symptoms until the later stages of the disease. Early detection is key to successful treatment and vision loss prevention. If you feel that you are at risk, you should visit Griffin & Reed Eye Care for a complete eye exam each year to check your overall eye health.

Signs that you may be suffering from glaucoma and need immediate medical attention include:

  • Vision loss, especially peripheral or side vision
  • Pain in your eye
  • Halos around lights in your vision
  • Eyes that look hazy (common sign in infant glaucoma)

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF GLAUCOMA?

Glaucoma is usually one of two main types: open-angle glaucoma or angle-closure glaucoma.

Open-angle Glaucoma

Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type. With this type of glaucoma, the fluid in your eye will not flow properly.

Angle-closure Glaucoma

Angle-closure glaucoma is a more rare condition where your eye cannot drain adequately because of a narrow angle between your iris and cornea.

HOW IS GLAUCOMA DIAGNOSED?

Glaucoma is diagnosed by examining your eye pressure. One of our doctors will visually examine your optic nerve and conduct a visual field test to test for loss of side vision.

TREATMENT FOR GLAUCOMA IN ROSEVILLE AND SACRAMENTO

Treatment for glaucoma can include:

  • Eye drops to reduce the amount of fluid in the front of your eye or increase the flow of fluid through the eye.
  • Laser surgery can be used to decrease fluid production in your eye or create a more open channel for fluid to drain from the eye.

In most cases, you will need to have your glaucoma treated and controlled before undergoing any refractive surgery to correct other common vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.
